This 150-Year-Old Wisteria Is The Most Beautiful One In The World

If you go to the Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi, Japan you’ll find a wisteria that’s often referred to as “the most beautiful in the world.” At around 150 years old, the massive wisteria is stunning when in full bloom. The vertical flowers dangle so far down that they nearly touch the ground and create a purplish-pink cloud that hovers above the grass.

Because of its age and the number of blooms, the vines are supported by gridded beams and form a stunning flower umbrella. With its ethereal presence and fairytale feel, it’s no wonder that this wisteria has been a muse for landscape photographers around the world.

This plant, located in Ashikaga Flower Park in Japan, is certainly not the largest in the world, but it still comes in at an impressive 1,990 square meters (or half an acre) and dates back to around 1870 (the largest, at about 4,000 square meters, is the wisteria vine in Sierra Madre, California).

Although wisterias can look like trees, they’re actually vines. Because its vines have the potential to get very heavy, this plant’s entire structure is held up on steel supports, allowing visitors to walk below its canopy and bask in the pink and purple light cast by its beautiful hanging blossoms.

If you’d like to visit the wisteria yourself, the best time of year to do so is in the middle of April to the middle of May. The Ashikaga Flower Park website has information about the flowers currently in bloom—including what they look like now.
