Square Foot Gardening Mistakes

Square foot gardening is the practice of dividing the growing area into small square sections (typically 12″ on a side). The aim is to assist the planning and creating of small but intensively planted gardens.

Digging a spot for square foot gardening in your garden

You try saving time and effort by digging a spot in your garden instead of building up. If you have grass that creeps, you will end up spending so much time just keeping the grass out of the bed because there’s no barrier.

Bad location

If you place your square foot gardening area next to a barrier (like a fence) there may come a time when you won’t be able to reach the spot to work in. For example, if you have tall crops, when they grow you will have problem reaching the weeds that are overpowering your garden. It can also be hard to harvest.

Using bad materials for the frame

Low quality materials don’t last as much as you need them. The frame can easily rot away after a couple of years and become useless? The best material to use is cedar. There are also other materials you can get, but cedar also helps repel some bugs.

Drip irrigation

If you live in an area where there is a risk of drought, the best way to water the garden is by installing a drip irrigation system. Many of the gardeners don’t. Drip irrigation provides controlled watering of the plants you want watered while avoiding the weeds or grass. You don’t waste water and you won’t have any problems with over or under watering.
