Common Mistakes When Taking Cuttings And Transplanting Plants

Timing when taking cuttings

One of the most common mistake people make is to take cuttings whenever. The best time to take cuttings is in the spring because the plant is then full of juice and the temperature is suitable for the plant to continue to develop on its own.

There is a right way to take cuttings and take care of them

Take the cutting from the growing parts of the plant and plant it in sand or sandy soil that is cleared of clay. The sand granules should not be too small, however they should be porous enough so that the air can freely reach the underground part of the cutting. A lot of people make the mistake to plant the cutting in soil which is meant for planting fully developed plants. This way you may cut the air flow of the delicate cuttings.

After you’ve prepared the cutting, decent watering is in order, and 20-25 days later, the plant should be ready for transplanting.

Mistakes when transplanting

The mistake a lot of people make is that they are too eager to transplant and do it too soon. The plant is ready to be transplanted when its roots have emerged from the bottom of the pot and the water quickly reaches the bottom of the pot.

A few hours before transplanting, water the plant thoroughly. Carefully pull it out of the pot (if it does not go easy, it is better to break it better rather than forcing the plant out).

Don’t forget about drainage

Next, remove the dead roots and part of the soil. At the bottom of the new pot, prepare drainage with small rocks, than add fresh, quality soil, and carefully transfer the plant. Add another layer of soil and gently tap the soil to settle it down. At the end, fill the pot with soil until it reaches 2 cm below the edge of the pot.
