Grafting Peppers

The technology or process of grafting peppers is not much different from other connections. Usually, it is done simultaneously. Grafted peppers possess high tolerance to diseases and pests.

After sowing, the substrates are sowed in containers, and the graft branches in crates (very densely).  The grafting can begin after 4 to 6 leaves are developed and the stem thickness reaches  about 2 mm.

The process of grafting

You will need a sharp blade (razor), placed in a special holder which cuts at an angle of 45 degrees. For grafting, it is ideal if the incision is precise and the surface of the second contact surface is bigger.

The base is cut above the cotyledons, and the graft branch usually also above the cotyledons, but it depends on how long the seedlings are. After merging with clips, you can lay wooden sticks also, which serve as a holder for the plants.

Ideally, the grafted branches should be put in special chambers for grafting, where the climatic conditions can be controlled. But in normal home conditions, you can use PVC box, where the grafted seedlings are placed in order and then watered. Crates, with their height of 25 to 30 cm represent holders, i.e. construction for the foil with which are covered.

The first layer is a perforated foil and the second and the third layer is regular foil. Over these three layers, dark foil has to be placed or green or black net for hail protection, which has the function of creating darkness within 48 hours. The grafted seedlings must be provided with suitable conditions, i.e. high relative humidity and low amount of sunlight.

After 48 hours, the dark foil is removed and the intensity of light is increased. By that time, the creation of the callus has already begun. After 96 hours (day 4 of the beginning of the grafting process) the other foil is removed, and after 144 hours (the sixth day) the last one is also removed. The perforated foil remains for 2-3 more days, when the seedlings are strong enough to be removed from the crate.
